As a Mayo Demonstration School alumni I often remembered the different songs we sang all the time at Mayo. Apparently a few of my friends wondered about the words to the songs too. So as a tribute to Mayo, and to all you other ex-mayoans out there, here’s a songbook of as many of the songs we sang at mayo that I could remember, find on the internet, or whatever.

Surprisingly many of the songs could be found on the wonderful internet. Others weren’t so easy to find, or not at all. “Billy Boy Blue” can be found just about nowhere as it isn’t so well known to the world, outside of our wonderful Mayo. Parts of songs were extracted from memory after great pain and thinking while singing to the rhyme and tune of the song. Others were collected somewhat by chance over time. As my mom did the yearbook forever and had the sheet music to the Mayo Song on the cover of the yearbook once, I had it too. Now that’s been added to this songbook too.

The songs collected so far are:

  • Mayo Song (with actual sheet music)
  • Mayo Rap (most of it)
  • Billy Boy Blue (first verse)
  • This is a story about Sammy
  • The World is a Rainbow
  • Five Pockets in My Overalls
  • Honk honk rattle rattle rattle crash beep beep
  • Moonshadow
  • Seasonal
    • Henrietta (I’m sorry Emily, I really don’t think that’s what this song was called, It’s the squirrel song everyone)
    • Must be Santa
    • Up on the Rooftop
    • Old Toy Trains

If you happen to remember the words to a song that isn’t listed above, any lyrical contributions would be greatly welcomed and appreciated. Or if there’s a song that isn’t above that you don’t know the words to, tell me that to. Lyrics can always be taken from siblings, namely my younger sister Maegan. There’s always a chance that I missed one too. Send words to bburky@bburky.com. So far only one person has helped donate words, Emily. Thanks.

Keep in mind this is a work in progress and not finished. I’ve asked Mr. McKenzie for the words to a few songs, so maybe there will be some more songs too later.
